In what has become an annual tradition, several members of the Lincoln Land Woodturning Club shared their skills with ementary school students from 16 counties in southern Illinois, during the Dixon Springs Stewardship Week from April 19-20, 2017. This year’s volunteers included LLW members Dan Schmoker, Tom Brock and Ted Laffey.
Stewardship week includes classes for students from Kindergarten to 6th grade based on conservation, forestry and nature, focusing on the practical and fun use of our natural resources. Volunteers do demonstrations and like to give each child a top. In the past, LLW volunteers have donated about 300 tops during the event.
The Dixon Springs Dixon Springs Agricultural Center (DSAC), operated by the University of Illinois since 1934, is a giant outdoor laboratory for conducting large-scale experiments. It is the largest experiment station of its kind east of the Mississippi River and is located in the Shawnee National Forest, making it particularly suitable to host youth events and other types of alternative education courses.
